Spiky Respirator Mask

This covers-the-mouth mask is a concept that I've seen a bunch recently. It seems like it caught on big time with the Burning Man sort of crowd, with styles ranging from punk to steampunk. It seemed like a fun thing to make, so I thought I'd give it a try.

Also, I've had these spikes laying around for some time, and I wanted to finally use them in something. I arranged them kind of like abstract cat whiskers.

This one I made entirely by hand last night. I don't really have the right setup to be punching all those holes with an awl quickly and safely, so basically as soon as this was done I rebuilt the design on my computer so I could laser cut it. (I then cut those this morning, and the pieces are sitting on my desk just taunting me to sew them together instead of doing work.) I think I may try putting leather straps with buckles on that version.

This one doesn't fit me very well, but that's something that's hard to determine until you try it. It would fit better on someone with a relatively small face. I don't think it's really child-sized, but it's not quite full-sized. I figure I'll post it up to Etsy once I get a chance to take photos of it being worn. I think this one I'll price at $35.
